Dr. Sawyer graduated from the USC School of Medicine with highest honors.  He then completed his surgical internship and residency at the University of Colorado Health Science and Denver Health Medical Centers.  He moved to Montrose, Colorado in 2000 where he joined Montrose Surgical Associates.  He now works for the Black Canyon Surgeons in Montrose.

He has excelled in the area of education.  During residency, he twice won the Golden Apple Award for residents.  In 2005, he initiated efforts to develop an LPN to RN nursing program at Mesa State in Montrose and taught Physiology as part of the pre-requisites program.  He is also appointed as an associate professor with the University of Colorado for training of medical students.

 Dr. Sawyer has brought advanced surgical care to Montrose.  He developed a thoracic surgery program at Montrose Memorial Hospital.  He has also made several advancements in Montrose which include the first laparoscopic colon resection, percutaneous tracheostomy, minimally invasive varicose vein therapy, and advanced wound care.
